“Deep tissue” and “relaxation” are two of the most requested massage styles — and one of the most common questions we hear at Luna Rain Massage in Muskegon is which one a person actually needs. The honest answer is that it depends on your body and your goal. Here’s how to tell them apart so you can book with confidence.
What relaxation massage does
Relaxation massage (often called Swedish) uses long, flowing strokes and lighter-to-medium pressure. The aim is to calm your nervous system, ease everyday stress, and leave you feeling rested. It’s a wonderful choice if you’re mainly looking to unwind, improve sleep, or treat yourself without a specific problem area in mind.
What deep tissue massage does
Deep tissue massage uses firmer, slower, more focused pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It’s the better fit when tension has settled in — the knot between your shoulder blades, a stiff neck from desk work, or lower back tightness that flares up by afternoon. How to choose
- Choose relaxation if your main goal is to de-stress, rest, and feel pampered.
- Choose deep tissue if you have specific tight spots, chronic tension, or recovery goals.
- Not sure? Book either and tell your therapist what’s going on — pressure is always adjusted to you, and many sessions blend both.
One myth worth clearing up: deep tissue shouldn’t be painful. Effective, yes — there may be moments of “good ache” as a knot releases — but sharp pain is never the goal, and your therapist will always work within your comfort.
If you have a specific issue
For pain, injury recovery, or a chronic condition, therapeutic and medical massage takes a more treatment-focused approach and can be tailored around exactly what your body needs.
