You’ve probably seen the round marks on athletes and wondered what they’re all about. That’s cupping — and fire cupping in particular is a technique with a long history and a real place in modern bodywork. At Luna Rain Massage in Muskegon, we offer it both on its own and as an add-on to your massage. Here’s what it is and what to expect.
What is fire cupping?
Fire cupping uses gentle heat to create suction inside glass cups, which are then placed on the skin. The suction lifts the tissue rather than pressing down on it — the opposite of most massage. That lifting action encourages blood flow to the area, helps release tight fascia, and can bring a sense of relief to muscles that stay stubbornly tense.
What are the benefits?
- Eases tight, knotted muscles that don’t fully respond to hands-on pressure.
- Promotes circulation to areas of chronic tension.
- Can help with the kind of deep tightness that builds from stress or repetitive strain.
- Pairs beautifully with massage for a more complete release.
Does it hurt? And what about the marks?
Cupping shouldn’t be painful — most people describe it as an unusual but relaxing pulling sensation. The circular marks it can leave are not bruises in the painful sense; they’re a temporary result of increased circulation and typically fade within a few days. Your therapist will always explain the process first so there are no surprises.
Adding it to your visit
Fire cupping works especially well alongside deep tissue massage, targeting stubborn areas from a different angle. Learn more on our fire cupping page, or ask about adding it when you book.
